The Japanese word geisha literally means “art person.” Singing, dancing, and playing the samisen (a lutelike instrument) are indispensable talents for a geisha girl. The arts that geisha perform are considered highly developed and, in some cases, unique throughout Japan to the world of geisha.

In Japan, geisha are highly respected because they spend years training to learn the traditional instruments and dances of Japan.

The first female geisha appeared in 1751 prior to that geisha were actually men, who entertained the guests with drums and music. However, the men were gradually replaced with female dancers, referred to as geiko. The term geiko is still used to refer to senior geisha who have passed all their exams; junior geisha still in training are called maiko.
